One of the most outstanding collections of Portuguese azulejos (glazed ceramic tiles) is exhibited in the green lush pathways of the Monte Palace gardens on Madeira Island and part at Quinta da Bacalhôa and Bacalhôa Vinhos Winery in Azeitão, Portugal. Various examples of one of the most genuine expressions of Portuguese art can be seen, starting in the 15th century, going all the way up to the 20th century. Tiles with different patterns or figurative representations were designed to cover arquitectonic surfaces, sometimes of large dimensions. The collection represents tiles in the different Mudéjar, Mojolica and Modern styles. Originally imported from Seville, in Hispano-Moorish tradition and later, under a multiplicity of influences, of national production with aspects that would always be linked to Portuguese azulejos.
